ABsolute AllStar, July 2017: Peter Buehlow

This is Peter Buehlow, just before the finish line at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. There were about 2,000 athletes from around the world there; about 150 were in his age group. They all had to finish in the top 1% or 2 % at qualifying races around the world to race in Kona, Hawaii. They swam 3.8km, then biked 180km then ran a marathon - 42.2 km. Peter was fortunate to have finished 2nd in his age group in Kona that year.

Congratulations, Peter, for all your wonderful achievements!

Each month at ABsolute Fitness, we highlight one of our members who has put extraordinary effort into his or her fitness to such a level that their energy is contagious and spreads to others throughout the gym.

Meet Peter, our ABsolute AllStar of the month.

How long have you been training at ABsolute Fitness?
I believe I've been at Absolute Fitness for 15 years - since before you moved to the present location.

What got you interested in fitness?
I've always been interested in sports and being fit. I was very active as a teen but got really out of shape in my 20's and 30's. A physical in my late 30's revealed I high blood pressure and needed to go on meds. This was the incentive to get back in shape. I was introduced to triathlon and this has been my hobby for 18 years now.

How do you find/make time to get your workouts in?
I'm fortunate to have been able to semi-retire quite early, so finding time is not an issue.

What tip(s) would you offer someone who is just starting out?
My tip would be to have many goals to work towards. They should range from being easy to tough. The goals should be flexible as things in life can change - you need to work around family, career and injuries.

What is your current workout routine?
I am always looking towards my next race - so I'm swimming, biking and running year round. I supplement that with weights and core work.

In your opinion, what is the biggest benefit of exercising?
I always feel energized after a solid workout. It helps in all aspects of life and hopefully keeps me out of the doctor's office.

How has being a member at ABsolute Fitness helped you on your fitness journey?
ABsolute Fitness has provided a great place/atmosphere to support my triathlon habit. I feel the weights and core work are essential for injury prevention. I also really enjoy the option of doing my training indoors on bad weather days.
